Kraków Airport, also known as Krakow John Paul II International Airport (IATA: KRK), is situated around Kraków, in Balice, 11 km west of the city's district center, in the Southern part of Poland.

Krakow Airport is the second busiest landing field facility in the country regarding the number of passenger guests served yearly. The current airport is named after Pope John Paul II, who lived most of his life in Krakow and became the city's Archbishop until his elevation to Papacy in 1978.

The airport is operated by John Paul II Krakow-Balice International Airport Ltd. The airport has an elevation of 241 meters or 791 feet Above Mean Sea Level. It serves three million passengers annually with more than 32,000 aircraft movements. It has a single runway (07/25), is 2,550 meters long, and is paved with concrete.

Krakow Airport has two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 for international flights, Terminal 2 for domestic services, and a cargo terminal.

Train Services at Kraków Airport

Traveling to/from the airport has been made easier with the railway station linking the airport to the city center.

The train is the fastest transportation from Kraków city center to the airport. The journey takes only 18 minutes.

Kraków Airport train station is just near the passenger terminal building, behind the multi-story car park, connected by a footbridge. The railway connection is operated by Koleje Małopolskie, a regional railways company operating in Małopolska Region.

Trains are equipped with air conditioning, power outlets, WiFi, and ticket machines. They also provide spaces for disabled passengers and persons with reduced mobility (PRM).

Inside its premises, near the Parking (P2), there is a paddock equipped with drinking water, benches, baskets, containers with pet-waste bags, animal toys, and obstacles such as hurdles, ramps, and jumps.

Only the animals using air transport, police dogs, and assistance dogs for people with disabilities can enter the passenger terminal, according to the regulations.

Airlines often charge an extra fee for allowing pets and/or service animals to travel inside the aircraft. Please inform the airline that you will bring an animal on board during the booking process. Note that the number of animals permitted on board is often limited. Larger animals can sometimes be transported as air cargo in compliance with special regulations. History of Kraków Airport

Krakow John Paul II International Airport opened for public civil aviation in 1964. The airport was a military site until February 28, 1968. Four years after, the first passenger terminal was built at the same army base.

In 1988, the airport authorities decided to build a new terminal that opened for public use in 1993.

In 1995, the entire apron was modernized.

In 1995, the airport's name was renamed from Krakow–Balice Airport to John Paul II International Airport Krakow–Balice in honor of Pope John Paul II.

Pope John Paul II spent many years of his life in Kraków, serving as Archbishop from 1963 until his elevation to Papacy in 1978.

In 2002, the airport was modernized. Since then, new international affinities have been realized and established.

In 2003, the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair became interested in starting a service from Krakow Airport. However, the authorities refused to reduce the landing fees.

In response, the regional management of Krakow and Lesser Poland Voivodeship has decided to build a new landing field facility close to the existing airport. An agreement between two management has been reached. The current airport opened its doors to Ryanair and other low-cost carriers such as EasyJet, Germanwings, and Centralwings.

On March 1, 2007, a separate domestic terminal (T2) was opened. At that time, plans were underway to construct a new airport.

A seven-story parking garage opposite T1 became fully operational in May 2010.

On December 12, 2012, Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair announced the opening of its second Polish base in Kraków. Making it a base for two Boeing 737-800 aircraft from March 31, 2013.

Krakow Airport has good growth prospects, as almost 8 million people live within 100km of it. It also has a good area on the existing and planned motorways system network in this part of Poland.

About Kraków, Poland

Kraków is the second-largest and one of the ancient cities in Poland. It is situated on the Vistula River's left (northern) bank in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. In 2000, Krakow was named as European Capital of Culture. In 2013, it was officially approved as a UNESCO City of Literature. It also hosted World Youth Day in July 2016.

Krakow has a temperate oceanic climate, denoted by Koppen classification as Cfb, best defined as a semi-continental climate. It was classified as warm summer continental weather in older reference periods.

In Kraków, the summers are comfortable; the winters are freezing, snowy, and windy; and it is a partly cloudy year round. In recent years, the temperature usually varies from -5°C to 24°C and is rarely below -15°C or above 30°C.

Based on the tourism score, the best time of year to visit Kraków for warm-weather activities is from mid-June to early September.
